Biography:
OK, mine is a sort of didactic tale on why you should not listen to your parents. Actually, having just seen a good band introduce themselves by saying "We're so happy to be playing here at **** grocery," I'm thinking maybe they were right.
I was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio for the first part of my life – my dad was a brilliant engineer and my mom a very artistic woman. She was a painter, costume and fashion designer and just an amazing teacher. So, I was reading, playing piano and singing (decked out in these great costumes) all thanks to mom by the age of three. Deliriously happy girl, I was. My uncles were bluegrass musicians in the area, so they let me do some work with them. I also did a lot of modeling, acting, etc., as a little kid (quintessential big-eyed, pale poor waif roles – that’ll come back to haunt you). I came really, really close to being cast as one of the child actors in the old film “Ace Eli and Roger of the Skies” (anybody remember that film? I doubt it. Would have been fun though. Spielberg wrote it). Almost had it. In the meantime, my dad was teaching me photography. Great times.
I was set to go to the Cincinnati Music Conservatory when my dad got a job working on the Apollo missions and brought us to Tulsa. I’m still in shock. No offense to Tulsa. I just had plans.
I start into drama and music as a TPS student. Started playing additional instruments, started to sing again. Sang a solo in class and my music teacher was blown away. It felt great. She said to the class, “isn’t this just amazing, that voice?” I was walking on air.
This is when the bullying began. Being not from Okla. and then music teacher’s pet. Pretty devastating. I’m sure some of you can relate. Did the best I could, stayed in music (mostly outside of school), stayed in school (most of the time), but it was not an easy time. My parents also started thinking I needed to pursue a more suitable path, so as I got older, I started getting pushed to get serious and follow a more traditional career.
I kept the music going outside of school, mainly outside of Tulsa, which has become a habit. I’ve worked around singing and playing, various styles. Also really started writing. Started out as a music student at TU, but wound up changing to writing, and then to photography/journalism. Really was pushed to change to a more suitable career and finally caved. I've worked as a professional photographer, writer, promotions specialist, public relations director, Web designer, etc. Love my career, but still miss what I use to do. It’s a very different life now.
I have had a great career in arts promotion and writing, and then in higher ed. When I taught in Arkansas, I did some play writing, music on the side, local productions, stuff like that.
Now, I’m a journalism/digital media professor in Tulsa. Love it, and still have a strong interest in the arts. Getting into multimedia. Have been asked to do some arts-related work again.
So, no big theater resume/bio, just want to lurk around get into Tulsa's creative scene and keep in touch.
Welcome to the network Beverly. I'm a local stagehand so if you have any technical questions maybe I can help. Do you do any work with TU's theatre department? Susan Barret, or Curt Selby?
