So how many of you use Facebook? Myspace? Twitter? If you have noticed these networks are becoming increasingly popular among your patrons and other members of your staff, boards and such.
Myspace, Facebook, Ning, and other social networks have made it very easy to get your information out to other sources very quickly. They are great for keeping in contact with the people that you connect with you. A little background about me, I currently run Tulsa Creative Network, with about 350 members to date. Those members create my network, I don't create it, I maybe change the homepage up once in a blue moon, but these people are creating it. They post things or questions in a real time enviroment and I can get info out to them very quickly. What are the positives and negatives? Are you using these and how effective have they been?
Another social networking website that has been gaining a lot of momentum is Twitter, and for several reasons. One, you can generate "Buzz" about your performance very quickly. Mainly people who are looking for things to do can see pics. I have found it very useful in this capacity...I didn't go to the Elton John/ Billy Joel concert...I wanted too, but didn't have the money, so I searched everyones blogs about people who went and got to see pictures from the show. Very cool. It is basically uniting the tribes.
Here are my top 5 things to achieve branding for the theatre company:
1. Work on your website...It's got to be solid. It's like your storefront...do people want to shop in your store, they will come in and stay awhile if you make the front page nice and pretty.
2. Have your news connections solid. Every single news source, including blogs and online sources, must be utilized and a relationship must be cultivated.
3. Join every social network, even if you are never going to go back again. This gives you a presence and looks like you are everywhere. You can automate a lot of this in order to make it look like you are active. My trick: Get a blog, and the use RSS Feeds to be able to send that blog everywhere.
4. Renew or Get a Logo that pops. Unveil it and get it out there. And graphic artists at colleges work for free, or next to free.
5. Everyone that you see, have a pitch ready about your company or theatre. You never know if they know someone who has a million dollars to throw away. Have a card ready for them (i am lacking on this part)
These are avenues that everyone in the theater community should be aware of, if you are not, check out Barack Obama's report on social networking...it's very enlightening.
